Treehouse in the USA: Hilltop Treehouse Retreat

The reputation of the Hilltop Treehouse Retreat in Washington certainly precedes it. It has been named in the Top 10 US Treehouses by AirBnB, featured in a Seattle Times article of ‘Unusual Places to Stay’, and voted among Best Northwest Escapes by Seattle KING5 viewers. It is fair to say that this special treehouse has impressed a few people! Before even getting to the treehouse, the island that it is located on is incredible. It is a 40-minute ferry ride to Lopez, the “Friendly Isle”, part of the beautiful San Juan Islands, famous for its fabulous views, which makes it an ideal spot for a treehouse.

The Hilltop Treehouse Retreat is nestled on a cliff in the trees high above Upright Head Channel. It is intended to provide a peaceful retreat for those that wish to step back from a hectic life and reconnect with their natural surroundings. It faces the ocean, affording stunning sunset views and a front-row seat to ferry and ocean vessel traffic. The property is bordered by the Upright Head Preserve, a 26-acre wonderland of trails and mossy, ocean overlooks.

The idea behind the design of the Hilltop Treehouse Retreat was to create a structure that looked as though it had been suspended in the trees for decades. Celtic designs in the woodwork, natural edge slabs of trees for counters and the desk, antique boxes for storage, and an old, well-loved rocker make this a beautiful, cozy place to relax.

Built with both comfort and safety in mind by local designer, Tom Froning of Soundesign, the platform on which the Hilltop Treehouse Retreat rests is suspended between two large Douglas Firs and was planned and put in place using specially designed metal beams that allow the treehouse to rock in the wind like a ship at sea. This is good for the trees, and there is nothing like a gentle rocking motion to relax the residents too!
