The lane narrows, hedgerows thicken, and the River Severn throws a lazy loop as if to say, slow down—you’re nearly there. RewildThings Treehouses doesn’t so much appear as it unfurls: six dark-wood cabins lifted into the canopy of an ancient Gloucestershire estate, gazing over reedbed wetlands where herons stalk and the dusk goes honey-gold. First thought: we should whisper. Second thought: we won’t want to leave.
Arrival is a small ceremony. You walk beneath alder and oak with birdsong for company—wren trills, kite keens, that rush of wings you feel more than hear. The cabins look quietly confident from the outside—contemporary lines, respectful stance—thanks to a local dream team: architects Millar + Howard Workshop, interiors by Tracey Boyd, furniture by Anselm Fraser, all brought to life by eco-build studio Greenheart. You can feel the care before you even turn a handle.
Inside, the mood is Nordic-luxe without the fuss. Pale timbers, sculptural lighting, a compact kitchen that actually works (sharp knives, good pans—praise be), and a living nook warmed by a wood-burner that flips the whole space into evening mode. The bedroom gets the hush right: natural linens, soft earth tones, and a glass door that slides open to a private balcony where the first coffee tastes notably better. Bathrooms go grown-up—rainforest shower, proper water pressure, and organic toiletries that smell like a meadow after rain.
Each treehouse has a personality. Adder, Kite, and Wildcat are near-siblings, built for three and oriented for sky and soft morning light. Wren is the snug romantic (two only; bring the novel you’ve meant to finish). Earth spreads out for four with room to sprawl, while Sky mirrors Earth’s layout but adds full accessibility—no compromise, just thoughtful design that happens to include everyone. Nice, and frankly overdue.
Step back outside and the forest keeps the hospitality going. A timber walkway leads to your private clearing: log-fired hot tub steaming beneath oak leaves, an outdoor kitchen set for charcoal suppers and late glasses of something local. The whole scene feels a bit cinematic. You’ll over-salt the first steak, learn the tub’s sweet spot, and swear the stars are somehow closer out here. (They’re not. It just feels that way.)
What elevates RewildThings beyond “pretty place in the trees” is the land’s mission. This is a living rewilding project: regenerative grazing, wetlands stitched back together, scrub and meadow managed for birds, insects, and all the shy, necessary things. You notice it in the quiet abundance—dragonflies strafing the pond, deer silhouettes at the treeline—and in small joys like warm bread from the on-site bakery or greenhouse greens that turn a simple lunch into a grin.
If you can be tempted away, Cotswold Water Park is a lake-splashed maze of trails and paddle spots; Gloucester’s Kingsholm stadium brings proper roar to a weekend; Bristol Airport keeps the getaway… gettable. But you might trade itineraries for ambling: boardwalk loops, binocular breaks, and that pleasing fatigue that arrives after doing mostly nothing.
RewildThings is gentle on the land and generous with the senses—smoke, birds, leaf-light, and the whoosh of reeds when the wind remembers. Ancient wisdom in a modern frame. Honestly, it’s the pause button many of us forgot we needed.
