Tucked away in the sleepy village of Porumbacu de Sus — that’s in Transylvania, but don’t worry, no vampires here — lies Porumbacu Treehouse, a quietly magical escape about 30 kilometers from Sibiu. It’s the kind of place you might scroll past on Instagram, pause for a second, and think, “Wait… is that real?” It is. And it’s even better in person.
There are just four cabins, perched among the trees like wooden daydreams. They’re not skyscraper-high, just enough to lift you off the ground and into a different pace of life. Each one spans around 50 square meters — open floor plan, wood-clad walls, a queen bed and a pull-out sofa that’s decent for a couple of kids (or adults who don’t mind a cozy squeeze). Natural light floods in from the giant windows, and if you’re anything like me, you’ll probably waste an hour just staring out at the branches swaying and thinking about… nothing. It’s wonderful.
Now, don’t let “treehouse” fool you — this isn’t a primitive cabin with creaky stairs and no plumbing. You’ve got a Smart TV, reliable-ish WiFi (it’s the countryside, okay?), a small but well-equipped kitchenette, and even complimentary snacks. That last bit might sound small, but when you arrive hungry after a long drive and find a few thoughtful treats waiting for you? That hits.
Outside, it gets better. There’s a big, shared garden that somehow stays peaceful even when all the cabins are full. A barbecue area for grilling under the stars, a gazebo that’s perfect for lazy coffee mornings, and free bikes if you feel like pedaling through the winding village roads without much of a plan. Honestly, I think that’s kind of the charm — not having a plan here.
And if you do want to venture out, the Făgăraș Mountains are nearby. Think endless hiking trails, some easy and some that’ll make your legs regret it later. There’s also the Porumbacu River close by — good for a walk, or just sitting on a rock and pretending you're a poet. It’s that kind of place.
The best part? It doesn’t feel like a hotel. It feels like staying at a friend’s off-the-grid cabin — if that friend had great taste in lighting and knew how to stock a kitchenette. Sure, you might spot a spider or two, and the silence might feel strange at first. But give it time. The stillness grows on you. You’ll find yourself breathing slower. Sleeping better. Staring at stars and not checking your phone every five minutes.
Porumbacu Treehouse isn’t flashy, but it’s special. It’s slow, intentional, and a little bit magical. And honestly? That’s enough.
