Nobody expects to find a glowing wooden pod hanging in the branches north of Auckland. Yet there it is: the Redwoods Treehouse, looking for all the world like a lantern dropped by a friendly alien. Ten meters above the ground, its golden ribs catch the light filtering through the pines, turning evening air into theatre.
The story begins in 2008 with a marketing campaign—yes, really. Pacific Environments Architects Ltd. (PEL) designed the structure for Yellow (the old Yellow Pages) as a one-off attention-grabber. What they created was far too good to disappear with the ads. When the campaign wrapped, the landowner kept it, wisely.
Then came The Experience Group, who looked at this whimsical UFO of timber and thought, why not throw a party in it? Since then, the Redwoods Treehouse has evolved into one of New Zealand’s most striking private venues—half sculpture, half dream sequence.
A raised walkway curls up from the forest floor, bringing guests into the heart of the tree. The pod itself, built from redwood harvested right there on site, manages to feel futuristic and earthy at once. Step inside, and the first thing you notice is the light—honey-colored, warm, flickering through curved timber ribs like sunlight through leaves. It’s strangely intimate. You half expect someone to hand you a flute of champagne and whisper, don’t drop it.
But this isn’t a restaurant, not exactly. It’s a blank canvas for events—weddings, launches, dinners, anything that needs a touch of wonder. The space comfortably seats 30 for a sit-down meal, or 50 if you’d rather mingle with a glass in hand. Every angle photographs beautifully (which explains its endless second life on Instagram).
Logistics? Sorted. The Experience Group handles everything—bookings, setup, even a 32-seat coach to shuttle guests from Warkworth. The venue hire starts at NZD 3000 plus GST, and while that doesn’t include catering, it buys you something rarer: an experience that looks like fantasy but feels tangible.
What makes it work, perhaps, is balance. The architecture is wild but grounded—built from sustainable materials, rooted in the land that birthed it. The structure’s timber ribs aren’t just decorative; they carry the load, both literally and visually. From below, the pod glows like a heart pulsing in the canopy. From inside, you’re floating in a cocoon of craftsmanship.
You don’t just visit the Redwoods Treehouse. You inhabit it for an evening—briefly part of a design that refuses to grow old, one party, one toast, one glowing night at a time.
