Perched high on the spine of Knights Hill, Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures offers one of those rare moments where nature, engineering, and a bit of magic all converge. Just two hours south of Sydney (but emotionally a world away), this spot takes you off the ground and into the canopy — and it does it with style.
You start on a soft, winding trail — 1.5 km long, wide and smooth enough for strollers and wheelchairs — and then the real adventure begins. A 500-meter-long steel walkway lifts you above the forest floor, winding through towering eucalyptus and sassafras trees, some 30 meters up. And honestly? It’s peaceful and a little bit exhilarating at the same time.
There are cantilevered springboard platforms along the way that gently bounce underfoot — not too much, just enough to remind you you’re floating. Then comes Knight’s Tower — the centerpiece — rising 45 meters above the canopy. The climb isn’t difficult, and at the top? Big skies. Wide views. Lush ridgelines rolling all the way to the Pacific. You’ll likely stand there longer than you meant to, just breathing it in.
But if you want more than walking and scenic sighing, there’s ziplining. And it’s not just for thrill-seekers — it's surprisingly beginner-friendly. You clip in, step off a platform, and suddenly you’re gliding between “cloud stations” 35 meters above the ground. Guides share cool facts about the forest while you're catching your breath (and maybe pretending you’re not a little nervous). Kids as young as four can join in, which makes it feel more like flying than anything extreme.
Little adventurers can dive into a different kind of story in the Enchanted Forest. Think fairy doors, pixies tucked into mossy logs, and whimsical touches that feel more like a pop-up storybook than a nature trail. It’s charming. Silly, sure — but charming.
Rain? No problem. The entire walk is designed to stay open in all weather, and if anything, a light drizzle actually makes the forest feel even more alive. The air smells sharper, the greens pop, and the trees seem to lean in closer. Plus, there’s interpretive signage all along the way, telling you about the geology, plant life, and history of the escarpment. You might even accidentally learn something.
There’s a café — Café 106 — with proper coffee and light bites, along with lockers, clean restrooms, and helpful staff who don’t rush you. It's the kind of place where you could spend a whole afternoon without even noticing the time.
You won’t sleep in a treehouse here, but nearby Robertson and Jamberoo have plenty of cozy spots to crash — from farm cottages to boutique inns, all close enough to return for round two if you’re tempted. And you might be.
Illawarra Fly isn’t just a treetop walk. It’s an invitation to slow down, look up, and remember how big and beautiful the world is — especially when you’re standing 45 meters above it.
