On Germany’s Baltic island of Usedom, in the imperial resort town of Heringsdorf, sits the Baumwipfelpfad Usedom—a treetop walk through beech forest that leads you skyward to fresh air and sea views. The accessible walkway spans about 1,350 metres, gently ramping up under 6%, rising to 33 metres above the forest floor (or around 75 metres above sea level)—with ramp and lift access so that strollers and wheelchairs are welcome.
Along the elevated trail you’ll encounter learning stations that reveal Usedom’s flora, fauna, history—and playful balance elements that kids (and adults) love: wobble beams, a mini-suspension bridge, simple challenges to keep it fun and engaging. It's not just information boards—instead, the forest becomes interactive.
The real centerpiece of the Baumwipfelpfad Usedom is the square observation tower, inspired by the old "Bismarckwarte" that once stood nearby. Climb up the spiral ramp (or take the lift) to the top and you’re treated to sweeping views: endless forest canopy, shimmering Baltic Sea, and on a clear day even glimpses of Poland’s shoreline. At the summit is a large walkable net, about 50 m²: safe enough to lie back on, look down through, and feel the forest from an unexpected angle—both peaceful and a bit thrilling.
Back at the entrance, there’s a cheerful wooden Kinderspielplatz right beside the restaurant terrace. Kids can climb, balance and zoom down slides before—or after—their canopy stroll. And while a bit older visitors relax, kids can also join the Comic Rallye—a nature-themed treasure hunt using a comic booklet and clue-based questions hidden on info boards. At the end, there’s a small treat waiting for the clever participants.
Expect to spend one to two hours exploring the Treetop Walk Usedom—time enough for the walk, a bit of play, lunch in the self-service café (“Futterkrippe”), and perhaps a round of table games outdoors. The café serves snacks, vegetarian and vegan options, and can accommodate families with its beer-garden-style seating overlooking playgrounds and forest edge.
When you're done, nearby Heringsdorf offers charming places to stay. Steigenberger Grandhotel & Spa Heringsdorf lies just a few minutes stroll from the treetop walkway. It boasts seafront luxury, indoor/outdoor pools, spa and fine dining—perfect if pampering is on your list. Just as close is A‑ROSA Strandidyll Heringsdorf, a four‑star resort with spa facilities, gardens, a luxe beachside vibe and great family amenities. Villa Bleichröder, a boutique neobaroque gem built in 1908, now lovingly restored with pool and gardens, feels intimate and refined. And Upstalsboom Heringsdorf, right on the promenade, delivers comfort and wellness with a breezy seaside ambience and easy access to both beach and boardwalk.
