Hidden in a lush valley just beneath the wild cliffs of the Hartland Peninsula lies Sleepy Owl Devon, a retreat that feels like a secret whispered through trees. In the heart of North Devon’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it’s become a favorite for those who want more than a break—they want time to breathe, to wander, to feel a forest cradle them.
Sleepy Owl isn’t huge—just two treehouses—but what they lack in quantity they more than make up for in magic and detail. Meet the Nest Treehouse: luxury wrapped in wood and glass, with sweeping views of rolling fields, a golden roll-top tub in the master, and a wood-fired hot tub tucked into its courtyard. Step outside and you’ll find a ‘treehouse within a treehouse’ for kids—bunks, fairy lights, secret corners. And couples? Pizza oven, projector, starry deck—the kind of place you lean in close.
Then there’s The Hideout Treehouse, a little more contemporary, a little more audacious. The star is a copper bath that shifts between indoors and out, so you can soak while hearing wind through leaves. Doors slide wide open to forest air; you live a little in and out. Hot tub, forest terrace, outdoor kitchen and pizza area: it’s a playground for adults disguised as retreat.
Both treehouses are dog-friendly (yes!), built with devotion and local materials. It’s not exterior showmanship—it’s intimacy, warmth, connection. You’ll talk to the trees. You’ll pause to listen. You’ll perhaps forget your phone.
And the location is gracious. From Sleepy Owl you can stroll down to Hartland Village—pubs, sea air, local dishes waiting. Walk a valley path to Hartland Abbey then follow cliffs to the Atlantic swell. Take day trips to Clovelly’s hidden lanes or Instow’s estuary calm. The forest gives you directions; they’re gentle ones.
One of my favorite bits: the eco-conscious backbone. These retreats use sustainable timber, celebrate local craftsmanship, operate with green principles. They’ve earned Green Tourism Gold, and they support local conservation efforts. It’s not greenwashing—it’s care in every nail, every beam.
Of course, it’s not perfect. On stormy nights you’ll hear creaks. Dew will blot glass. The feeling of being cradled sometimes bites your comfort zone. But those imperfections are what say: you’re in nature, not a stage set.
Sleepy Owl Devon isn’t just a place you stay. It’s a pause point. A forest whisper you live in, before stepping back to the world. If you long to fall asleep under leaves, wake in sky, cook fires, share quiet laughter—this place might be for you.
